Testing Pilot Notice

  January 4, 2020

Good Afternon and a Happy New Year to everyone,

I am pleased to announce Colona School District #190 has been selected for participation in the 2nd phase pilot of the IDPH Covid-19 Rapid Testing Program.  This testing protocol utilized the "BinaxNOW COVID-19" rapid test.  To obtain a test result, a simple nasal swab will be performed here at school and results will be obtained in 15 minutes.  We are currently finalizing all plans in an effort to implement this program.

Some key facts about our testing program:

1. This test type is significantly "less invasive" and much more pleasant than the traditional tests administered by your physicians.  A simple nasal swab is used that does not extend far at all.

2.  These tests will reduce the number of students needing to quarantine!  They will be used to determine positivity of symptomatic students In simple terms, this will allow us to determine if a runny nose, sore throat, or a headache is caused by Covid-19 (necessitating quarantine) or another less dangerous cause.

3.  Testing will be performed by our certified, registered, school nurse in a designated testing area.

4.  These rapid tests are being provided by the Illinois State Board of Education & Illinois Department of Public Health at no cost to the district.

5.  In order to participate, the district will need a signed permission form for each student.

6.  Results from every test, positive or negative, will be reported to IDPH through the "RedCap Reporting System."

7.  Participating school staff will be tested approximately once or twice per week in an effort to screen for positive cases and decrease loss of work days.

Please watch for the permission forms coming home with your students this week.  I respectfully ask that they be returned as soon as possible to allow us to move forward with our program.  Do not hesitate to email me with any questions or concerns!

Warm regards,

Carl Johnson, EdD
